How Yoga Healed My Depression
"When I stand before thee at the day's end, thou shalt see my scars and know that I had my wounds and also my healing."
– Rabindranath Tagore
Depression was like a rogue wave. I never saw it coming. But then it’d hit me. And I’d be under. For hours or days or weeks. With no clue what was up or down or how to get out.
It was depression that led me to yoga asana. A last-ditch-effort to save myself when nothing else was working. I’d struggle through practice, eyes watering, muscles quivering, then lay there, basking, in a rare and profound sense of peace.
But the inner equilibrium would only last for about 4 hours. Which led me to the conclusion that if I practiced twice a day, I’d feel okay for at least 8.
So. I went to as many classes as possible. That got expensive so I did work trade (=literally cleaned toilets for classes) and learned to practice on my own.
I’ll never forget the day I felt like I was out of the stormy sea. I was living on Maui, driving down Hana Highway, the ocean on my left, a rainbow on my right, and this thought sang through my mind, “I’m so happy….” It was so unexpected, and so foreign, that I had to pull over. I realized that I could not remember the last time I felt the crushing wave of despair that threatened to overwhelm me. So I wept. In relief, and hope, and wonder.
That was almost 20 years ago. It was my first undeniable proof that moving and breathing can be healing. This week’s podcast unpacks what I've learned about healing through the body and how yoga asana, strength training, and cardio set you up for antifragility.
But here’s a truth I don’t like to admit: if I started yoga today, I don’t think it’d have the same impact. Back then, yoga was different. It was closer to the intentions of the tradition. And classes consistently provided the 3 keys for transforming:
The nervous system was rewired through postures, alignment, awareness, and deep, rhythmic breathing.
Challenge and change were embraced with calm curiosity.
Dharma talks, themes, and philosophy guided you into a new identity.
Learn about healing through the body, take a trip down memory lane with yoga history highlights, hear how my practice has changed, and unpack the benefits of yoga asana, strength training, and walking (especially outside). Watch Now.
May your practice be healing,
