How does the body keep the score?

“Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.”

– Bessel van der Kolk

You’ve heard that your body keeps the score. But how? And where?

Science is not super clear on this. But generations of body workers and movement educators agree… stress seems to get stuck in your body. In connective tissue more specifically.

The last decade has produced more data on how your connective tissue (fascia) is like a secondary nervous system and the fibers are about 80-90% interoceptive. This points to fascia being your organ of inner awareness.

If you’ve watched the podcast episodes on Depression or Overwhelm, you know that interoception is a key to healing.

So. Do you have issues in your tissues? Here are 3 ways to work them out:

  • Myofascial Release

  • Somatic Release

  • Well-tensioned movment

Watch on Youtube or Listen on Spotify for more.

May your practice be connective,
Alison

PS: Are you in Bend? This weekend we’ll be exploring fascia to build strength and resilience at the Introvert's Retreat.

PPS: Send me your questions because we have 2 more episodes on this!
